What is an on-line newspaper auction? How does it work?

How does a newspaper on-line auction work?

Advertisers in your community provide goods and services in exchange for advertising in your newspaper.

These goods and services are offered to the community via your auction website -- powered by Arista Technologies' software.

Bidders get high quality items at great prices, your advertisers get an advertising credit, and your newspaper collects the cash!

How large an ad credit do advertisers get?
Every item that is placed into the auction has a reserve price -- a price that you set before the auction begins. If the bidding on that item results in a high bid that is at or above the reserve price, then that item will be sold to the highest bidder. The advertiser receives an ad credit in an amount equal to the item's retail value. The high bid amount -- paid directly by the winning bidder to you -- becomes revenue to your newspaper.

How does the winning bidder collect their item?

The winning bidder visits your newspaper after the end of the auction. They pay you for the item, and you give them a certificate. The bidder takes that certificate to the advertiser's store and takes possession of the item.

How long does an auction event last?

That's up to you. Typically an event will run for 7 to 10 days.

How do we let people know about our auction event?

You generate interest and excitement about the upcoming auction through a print advertising campaign. You also place an ad for the auction on your newspaper's webpage. When people click that ad, they are able to browse through the auction items -- viewing pictures and reading descriptions. They are also able to register as bidders before the auction starts. About a week before the auction starts, you will probably want to print a multi-page insert in your paper. This insert will include pictures, descriptions, and opening bid amounts for all of the items in the auction, and will also include all of the auction rules. You can see an example of how such an insert might look by viewing this sample.
